How Traditional Chinese Medicine supports natural conception and improves IVF outcomes — what the research shows and what we see in clinic.

Infertility affects roughly one in seven couples in Singapore. While modern reproductive medicine has transformed outcomes, many couples find that combining IVF with Traditional Chinese Medicine yields better results — and a calmer journey.

From a TCM perspective, fertility depends on the harmony of Kidney essence (Jing), the smooth flow of Liver Qi, and the abundance of Blood. When any of these is depleted or blocked, conception becomes difficult.

A typical TCM fertility consultation begins with a detailed review of the menstrual cycle — its regularity, flow, colour, and accompanying symptoms each phase. This information, combined with pulse and tongue diagnosis, helps us identify the constitutional pattern at play.

Treatment usually combines herbal medicine with weekly acupuncture, timed to the four phases of the cycle. A 2018 meta-analysis in the journal Reproductive Biomedicine Online found that women receiving acupuncture before and after embryo transfer had significantly higher clinical pregnancy rates than controls.

Equally important is what we do not promise. TCM is not a guarantee of pregnancy. What it offers is a careful, individualised approach to optimising the body's reproductive environment — improving cycle regularity, egg quality (with three months of preparation), uterine receptivity and stress resilience.

Many of our patients come to us after months or years of unsuccessful trying. Some conceive naturally during a course of TCM. Others go on to successful IVF cycles with TCM support. We work alongside your fertility specialist, never in competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start TCM if I am planning IVF?

Ideally three months before egg retrieval, as this aligns with the natural maturation cycle of the egg. We coordinate timing carefully with your IVF schedule.

Can TCM help with male fertility?

Yes. TCM treatment focused on tonifying Kidney essence has been shown to improve sperm count, motility and morphology over a 3–4 month course.

Is acupuncture safe during early pregnancy?

Specific acupoints are contraindicated during pregnancy, but careful, supportive acupuncture is widely used — including for morning sickness, threatened miscarriage and lower back pain.
